Volissos is one of the biggest villages of the northwest part of Chios.
It stretches over an area of 33 square kilometers and it has an elevation of 100 meters.  Its distance from the city of Chios is 41 km and 36 miles by sea.
Volissos is a picturesque village with alleyways, with cube-shaped houses built with red and grey stones, tiled rooftops, pergolas and tiny yards. The narrow streets of the village are in their majority settled with pebbles.
There are plenty of windmills and watermills around the village area.

The population of Volissos until 1920 counted 2500-3000 residents. At the census of 1951 there were 1087 residents, in 1961 had 945 residents, in 1971 had 683 residents, in 1981 had 521 residents and in 1991 had 493 residents.
