Volissos -Churches

Today in Volissos there are three parish churches:

  • The church of Sotira Christou: It is located at Hori district. In its sanctuary there are the holy remains of saints that Volissians clerics transferred from the Monastery of Mounthon. It is dated back in 1750.

  • The church Kimiseos Theotokou: It is located at Pithonas district. It was renovated twice in 1835 and in 1885. The pebble made mosaic in its court is marvelous.
  • The church of Agios Georgios Koutoudioti: It is located at Pirgos district. In earlier times there was a smaller temple which demolished in order to be built the modern one in 1895. There are  holy remains of Saints inside the temple,

At Vasilica, outside the village, is located the temple of Agios Georgios Vasilicon. It has an impressive facework of stone pillars, arches and an octagonal cupola. The temple is built with red and white stones. Next to the temple there is the remains of its tower, the”koumpes”, which is built with the famous stones mined from Thimiana, (a village of Chios). The semi domes and crenellations are very distinct in our days. Around the church there was the medieval Vasilica settlement. The tradition says that there was living the legendary King Ierokefalos who wandered only at nights or in the twilight.
