From sociological aspect citizens of Pyrgi were separated in three social classes depending on their origin and not on their economic situation, as it happens in most cases. It should be marked that contrary to the rest of Greece, in Pyrgi the patriarchic system was not in effect. The girls were brought up, like boys, and had freedom in the issue of marriage (if they did not agree with the parents they resorted to the kidnapping "klepsia"). The women maintained the surname of their father and had the complete right of possession and management of their father’s dowry etc
Citizens of Pyrgi were also characterized for their special dialect. This dialect was maintained for a lot of decades, intact. It was heavy and intense, but the last years was simplified enough and foreign words were added to it. Generally, it is one of the most genuine Modern Greek dialects that are preserved until today.
Finally, people from Pyrgi in the past were distinguished for their intense religious feeling: Each day began and finished with prayer. They also maintained the fasts apart from cases of illness and so on. |
