Village “Emporio”

Emporios is a developed coastal settlement with a very quiet harbour. Its distance from Pyrgi is 6 kilometres.  In this settlement exist villas of various shipowners of Chios and beautiful traditional houses. Emporios is famous for its beach, “Mavra Volia” (black pebbles). The beach is full of black pebbles, remnants of volcanic past of the area (Psaronas– the peninsula southern Emporios used to be a volcano).
In Emporios existed ancient and medieval settlements, but very few elements have been found. The old-christian baptistery is a sightseeing of great interest. Its main space is locked and accomodated, but we can see externally, architectural relic, marble statues, kiones and stone steps.
In the northern part of Emporios exists the hill of Prophet Ilias. In its top it stands out the white church of Prophet Ilias. In the top of hill still exists the astonishing ancient temple of Afaia Athina, which was discovered by the excavations of English archaelogists P. Hood and I. Boardman, during the period 1952- 1955. In that temple was worshipped Athina (greek godess), which protected the settlement that Iones had built in the 8th B.C. century in the side of the hill.
