The church Ag. Apostoloi is an excellently preserved Byzantine monument - copy of catholic of Nea Moni. From the two domes of temple the big one has eight-angled support. The murals of temple have been painted by Antonios Domestihos from Crete in 1665. A dome and two arches cover the narthex. Contrary to other Byzantine churches, domes are decorated with toothed films, marble arcs, and double marble kionas. The arches and pediments in the long side of temple remind the model of Nea Moni, while the rich ceramic decoration and the effervescent natural colors have their own style which is not irrelevant with their current age (13th – 14th century). The monk Simeon constructed the temple from the beginning in 1564 according to an epigraph that exists above the central entrance of temple.
In the interior of temple exist murals that are preserved in good condition. Only the murals of the narthex have been destroyed. They are all created by Cretan Domestihos Hunter (1665).
On the inside dome (troulo) God is portrayed surrounded by prophets. Between the windows are portrayed whole-body angels and in a lower level the twelve Apostles. Bellow someone can see the four Evangelists. The murals of the northern side present the Baptism and the Resurrection of Christ and lower the life of Apostle Petros. Similarly in the southern side are portrayed the Birth and the Metamorphosis and below scenes that narrate the life of another leading Apostle, Pavlos. The surfaces of the chancel are covered with other subjects. On the narthex is portrayed the Virgin Mary (Panagia) with Christ, surrounded by the Apostles. |
