Pyrgi is the biggest village among the 21 Mastic villages and is located in the southern part of Chios, 25 kilometres from the centre of the city. It belongs to the Municipality of Mastichochoria (Mastic Villages). Pyrgi is the capital of Mastichohoria.
It is built in a valley far from the sea. The houses of the village are built one next to the other and its facades are decorated in a special way. The streets are set with plates and they are narrow. In the centre of the village dominates the devastated tower (Pyrgos) from which the village took its name. The way Pyrgi is constructed reminds fortress, and its urban planning is preserved from the Genoese Period, aiming to the protection of residents from raids. |
