The planning of the village
architectural elements(“xysta”)

A characteristic of uniqueness in Pyrgi is the eminent "engravings". All facades of houses and  buildings are engraved.
Engravings are decorative forms, geometric, engraved (scraped off) on fresh mortar on the facades of houses and other buildings. This technique was imported in Chios probably by Genova of Italy the period that the Genovates possessed the island.  Engravings appear to go through three different periods:
1) Precocious period, in which belong engravings from the beginning of their appearance until the middle of 19th century. The style of decoration here is simple with repetition of same subject and limited number of patterns. 2) The second period reaches until 1950. Here the subjects are enriched and the number of patterns increases. Free plant and animal patterns are presented for the first time, the use of circle with the famous "moons" are intense. River sand that was used until then is replaced by black sand from the beach of Black Seashore in order to be achieved colour contrasts.  3) The third period reaches until the 20th century. Materials change, marine sand is used, cement and “foumo” (black dust) is added so that the result will be less engraved. The drawings remain more or less the same and a few are still added, the use of colours is completely abandoned and the synthetic faculty slack. The art of engraved is maintained until today. Most of craftsmen in the village know the technique. The cement, the lime and the sand of sea are mixed and unfold with a special tool in the surface of buildings. Then, this surface is covered with fluid lime and becomes white. When it becomes dry, they engrave on it (from the upper to the lower part of the building in horizontal areas) patterns with the help of various tools as alphadi, metre, and metal quill. The next step is to engrave the surface of lime. This is done with a fork. As soon as the lime is removed, the dark sublayer is presented and the patterns that are in their majority geometric shapes (triangles, rhombs, circles, semicircles, fishbones) are shaped. Certain names that have been given in patterns are chain, flag, clew, chalice. The craftsmen of Pyrgi used to improvise by themselves, creating various geometric subjects which resemble with the Italian technique sgraffito, that existed for many years in the City of Chios (Hora) and in the Plain (Kampos). Masterpieces of this teqnique  are found in the Italian architecture of Renaissance.
