The historian Georgios Zolotas reports that the first village that built in the position where Agios Yannis is located in our days, was the village Ano Olympoi. As the historian Georgios Zolotas referenced, the name Olympoi is explained by the name of the hill Olympus that the village is built on. Also the village name is in plural, as a lot of other villages of Chios (Kardamyla, Didymes, etc.). The current village was called Kato Olympoi, because was built under the village Ano Olympoi. Zolotas reports a traditional story, where the women of the village dressed with male costumes, made war with the Vrakanousous (residents of a more important village that was located close to the villages of Olympoi), that it is said, they were pirates. During the war, a Vrakanoysaina (a woman resident of the above mentioned more important village that was located close to the village Olympoi) discovered the trick of the women of Olympoi (that they represented the men warriors) and gave courage to the Vrakanousous. |
