The Turks domination

During the Turkish domination Chios, because of its mastic production, obtained certain privileges. Mesta, along with the other villages of the region, was dedicated to the Sultan’s mother and formed a separate administrative region, independent from city of Chios, but directly related with Constantinople. The greater of troubles that took place in Mesta was happened in 1822. Under the prompt of Lycourgous Logothetis who came from the island of Samos the Chios people were convinced to declare revolution against the Turks. The most important history event of this period was the Chios Massacre in 1822 when the Turks massacred thousands of civilians in order to stop the rebellion. Whoever from Mesta was not slaughtered, either had time to escape in Psara and Cyclades (islands of the Aegean Sea), or was captured to be sold at the slave market. Those who didn’t left were hiding in the caves and the shrubs of the region. Many of them were captured destined for the slave markets but the need for mastic production forced the Turks to release whoever had knowledge of the mastic cultivation. Also the Turks allowed to whoever had left coming back in order not to loose the income from the profitable trade of Mastic.
