Because of the continuous population growth, the old temple of Tachiarchon was difficult to serve the religious needs of the habitants. So it was decided to be constructed a larger church. The construction site was chosen to be in the centre of the village at the place of the central tower which had been abandoned for years. This tower was square shaped and 20 meters tall. In each of its corner there was a semicircular small tower. The central tower was four-storeyed in order to accommodate all the village residents. The access was only possible by rope-ladders from the top. Around the tower an extra wall completed the structure with small towers at the corners and battlements. So it was decided the tower to be demolished as the new temple was going to take its place. The demolition began in 1858 and it took two years to be completed. Afterwards the building of the temple begun and lasted until 1868. The temple in our days preserves its initial external look. With a total area of 450 square meters it is considered to be the biggest church of Chios and one of the biggest in Greece. The temple entrance leads through an elegance pillar stranded gate to the courtyard. The interior of the temple is divided into three aisles with two rows of monolith columns. The central aisle is dedicated in the name of Archangels Michael and Gabriel, the north aisle in the name of Saint Haralampos, and the south to the memory of Saint Apostles. The old chancel screen of the church was made of wood. In our days it is built with bricks and was constructed in 1895. The altar is built with a massive monolith which was transported in one night by numerous workers from the Seaport of Mesta. Morphologically the temple is one of the most beautiful samples of the late Chios folkloric style which combines decorative elements of baroque and rococo in a body that stays close to the temple style. Externally the temple has a double staircase leading to the bell tower. Initially the building materials of the bell tower and the staircase were the Thimiana stones. Thimiana is a village of Chios that is famous for its stones. Later these stones were replaced with stones from the region because the older ones had been worn. The staircase leads to the temple courtyard. The designs made of black and white pebbles are remarkable. The pebbled made courtyard is the hallmark of the Chios architecture. At the temple’s narthex anyone can notice the remains of the old tower: the water pool or ‘funtana’ as it is named in Mesta. |
