Cultivation

The mastic trees are cultivated in valleys but also in mountainous regions, as the stony ground encourages its growth. The mastic trees are planted in lines and their margins lean from each other. In our days, the mastic trees cover 20000 acres of land, which means the 12% of cultivable land. The number of families that work on the mastic culture amounts in 4500 thousands.
The mastic trees proliferation becomes exclusively with slips. For culture are usually selected the male trees. The slips are planted in February and March in-depth of 40 cm. the last few years, in order to have faster results, are used take root injections.
When mastic trees reach in age of 3 years old, it begins its trim which it should be repeated each year. The young plants should be watered the first 2-3 years. The older trees do not need water, because they have big resistance in drought. On the other hand, the big humidity influences negatively the quality of mastic. The mastic trees are resistant plants and thus are not got illnesses easily. However, there are exist illnesses from which the more often are a kind of fungus (tinder) the gender of Polyporus, and another kind of fungus Eutyra Armeniaca. Mastic trees also are offended from various “coccid” the louse (coccidae).
