The mountainous nature and the horrible slaughters of Anavatos offered rich material for the creation of many traditions, religious and historical.

Ligeri (religious tradition)
During the Ottoman domination a very beautiful girl lived in Anavatos. Her name was Ligeri. When the Turkish Pasha of Chios, was informed about that, asked her to marry him. The girl did not accept his proposal.  Characteristically she said that she’d be better die than become the woman of a Turk. On the 6th of September the day of celebration of Taxiarhis the Turkish Pasha sent ten Turks, in order to bring her to him. On the road to the Pasha the Turk who was holding her tripped while she grabbed a wild apricot tree. The Turks tried to pry her loose from the tree but could not drag her away. In the end the Turk cut her head off and took it to the Pasha. When he saw the head of Ligeri, lost his senses. By the time he recovered he gave order to execute the Turk that killed Ligeri and throw him in the sea.
This young girl will become a saint for as a Greek she held the old customs of the Greeks, country, faith and family.

The old woman-Mantalena (Historical tradition)
Turkish disappointed from the efforts to conquer Anavatos, resorted to the old woman named Mantalena who was descending from the town of Vrontados. They found her outside the fortress walls. As she was terrified, she led them to a secret wall entrance in order to rescue her life. The Turks killed the woman traitor anyway, and rushed inside Anavatos.
