The fortress tower of the village Anavatos distinguishes from all the castles and the fortresses of the island. The nature helped the craftsman, as the non-accessible rock is a natural castle capable of repelling even the strongest human fortifications. The identifying characteristic of this wall is that it is not a particular building with pylons, towers and bastions, but a rock. On that rock were built houses and walls that were connected with each other and made the castle. Here all the buildings are made from stone. Its height varies, because the surface of the rock, where it was constructed, is erratic. This wall, in the Medieval period was one of the best fortresses-shelters of Chios against the invasions of the pirates. In the Genoese period (1356 A.D.) the castle of Anavatos allocated even firearms that’s why its guards were not compliable to the commands of Genouates governors of Chios. |
