Archaic Age (750-550 B.C.)
Arts

In the field of architecture, the remains of some archaic temples, such as the one of Apollo in Fana and that of Athena in Emporeios, reveal how deeply this field was influenced by the Ionian architecture. This is depicted by the imitative construction of parts of the temple and by turning some architectural forms into parts of living organisms. In Fana the corner depicting the coronation takes the shape of an impressive mermaid (depiction of mermaid in the ancient Greek art) and the function of the base of the depiction in the temple of Emporeios takes the shape of a lion’s paw. One of the most important sculptors of Chios was Voupalos (6th century B.C.), who was also an architect. The art of sculpture had started developing since the beginning of the Archaic Age. The myth has it that the sculptors of Chios were also very good at working with other materials. In metalwork, Glaucos from Chios was the first one to have invented the casting of iron.

It is obvious that in Chios during that period Arts (ceramic, sculptural, plastic, and architectural, metalwork) were developed and thrived, contributing a lot to the culture and civilisation of the island and at the same time laying the foundations for the cultural future of the island.
