Early Neolithic Age - the Bronze Age

“Aghios Gala” and “Emporeios”, two archaeological sites of Chios, give us information about the Early Neolithic Age (6000-5000 B.C.) and especially about the pre-Hellenic peoples that had settled in the island. The archaeological site of Emporeios is a characteristic example of a coastal settlement, whose economy was based on livestock- farming, fishery and hunting. The excavations in Emporeios brought to light ten easily noticeable layers which cover the period 6000 B.C. to the end of the Early Bronze Age (2000 B.C.). The important characteristics of the main period of the Bronze Age (2800-1100 B.C.) is the use of metals, the better distribution of work and the foundation of fortified urban centers. At first the settlement in Emporeios had been founded settlement in the southern part of the harbor; it also spread to the top of the hill Citadel and was later fortified with a stone Wall. In the middle of the third millennium, a fire completely burned down the settlement and it was reconstructed, being an important urban centre.

During the first centuries of the Middle Bronze Age (Middle-Hellenic 1900 – 1600B.C.), a new wave of intruders invaded the Aegean Sea. Some researchers mention them as Achaeans and others as Ions, who would embrace the Minoan Civilisation and it would be evolved in the Mycenaean Civilisation.

The Later Bronze Age (1600-1100 B.C.) is very important, because Greek tribes founded colonies for the first time. It was named Mycenaean Civilisation since the metropolis of this civilasation was Mycenae. The Mycenaean period was characterized by the increase of settlements and spread of trade together with the Mycenaean world. The Mycenaean pots that were found in Emporeios prove the direct commercial relations between Chios and Crete.
The Mycenaean settlement of Emporeios was abandoned or destroyed at the beginning of 11th century B.C. and remained uninhabited and deserted for three centuries at least. In fact, when the new settlement was founded, this was built in the western part of the hills of the prophet Elias.
