On 3 April 1881 became the terrible earthquake that is known of the natives as the Catastrophy. The focus of earthquake was in Mastichochoria [villages on the South Chios] and had size 6,5 units of Richter scale. The main earthquake destroyed roughly the ¾ of island. Were killed roughly 3600 persons and were injured 7000. In north of the island was not killed anyone. The big desaster is attributed in the narrow streets. Turks, Greeks and Jews were the more suffered, while Fragkoi least, because their houses were rounded by big gardens. In the region of Tsesme, of Asia Minor were killed in total 55 persons and were injured 150. In Chios, were totally destroyed the villages: Nenita, Vouno, Flatsia, Kalamoti, Kini, Kallimasia, Didima, Nehori, Thymiana, Dafnonas, Katarraktis, Ververato and Tholopotami. In the city of Chios were destroyed almost all the houses. The castle suffered serious damage and the ground of beach was sunk at 80 hundredth. Also, possibly, it was created tidal wave (Tsunami) because was found sand in a house wall. |
