The effort for release of Chios failed, thus Chios remained outside from the borders of Greek state till the Balkan wars. The residents that returned in the island afterwards the Revolution, constituted the core of rapid growth of island at the 19th century. From 1850 began the first appreciable effort for intellectual and economic rearrangement and was mainly important the effort in the shipping enterprises. Initially with sail and afterwards with the steam shipping, the island occupied one from the first places of Hellenism. In 1889, in Chios they existed more from the 300 sails (from that 80 had capacity from 500 until 1100 tons) and four steamboats. At second half the 19th century became appreciable efforts in the education area. In 1885 were built the High school of Chios and in 1892 the Urban Faculty. In 1884 were built the Library of Chios (Library Korai), that constitutes today one from the richer libraries, with old and new publications.
