The armada of Psara was that season, one from the stronger and more experienced armadas and fairly had become terror of Turks. In 1824 the sultan Machmoyt the B' allied with Mehmet Ali of Egypt and turned against Psaras, after previously he destroyed Kaso. Psarianoi [the residents of Psara] asked help from the Greek government, but unfortunately, no one were interested for the island. Thus, on 20 June 1824, the Turks with 235 boats and 14000 soldiers approached the northern coasts of island. Psarianoi fought hardly, but did not accomplish him. The Turks slaughtered whoever they found in front of them. Some of the residents of Psara tried to leave with their boats, but because of their panic, they crashed from each other and they were drowned. The last scene was played in Paliokastro, where the last Psarianoi with their women and their children were hidden, and were blowed the (gun)powder magazines, killing all the Turks that they were found there. By 7000 of the residents of Psara were saved only 3600, whereas by the 25000 refugees by the Asia Minor that were in the island, the 15000 they were slaughtered by the Turks. |
