The Turks domination

In September 1694 the Venetians arrived in the island again, as they had been invited by the Catholic residents of the island (although the Greek ones had disagreed with that invitation).  They were planning to send the Turks away and to conquer the island.  On 7th September 1694 ten thousand (10,000) soldiers and four hundred (400) horsemen arrived in the island.  The Turk sub-perfect of Chios, Pasha Silahdar Hassan who had four hundred (400) soldiers in the castle was terrified by the Venetian fleet and asked for help from Constantinople.  Meanwhile, the Venetians conquered Chios and reached an agreement with the Turks.  That agreement gave the right to those Turks who wanted to migrate to Tsesme.  Six thousand (6,000) Turks left the island, while a lot of them (almost five hundred) were killed by the Venetians and left many weapons and munitions.  The Venetian General Antonios Zinon rebuilt the damaged Walls of the castle, built the square of Vounaki and he pulled down many houses which were built near the castle.  The moment the Venetians became masters of the island, no religious services were held in Orthodox churches, it was forbidden for the Orthodox Chians to have services in the Greek language, many properties were confiscated and they tried in every way they could to make the inhabitants Catholics.  Chians’ life became unbearable, much worse than the life they led during the Turks’ domination.

When Sultan Ahmites heard about the domination of Chios by the Venetians, he gathered his army in order to conquer Chios again.  So Seraskeris was ordered to invade Peloponnesus and Mesomortos was ordered to invade Chios.  In that way he tried to split the Venetian military force and to have them fight in two fronts.

On 8th February 1695, a tremendous naval battle between the Turks and the Venetians took place.  Two thousand (2,000) Venetians were killed and much more Turks.  None of the two naval forces managed to win this battle. After ten days, on 19th February 1695 a new naval battle took place.  This time the Turks were forced to depart for the East and the Venetians returned to Chios.

However, the Venetians decided that they would have to abandon the island because they were no longer in position to defend it from the Turks.  Even some Catholic inhabitants of the island left (sixty families left for Peloponnesus), being afraid of the Turks.  As soon as the Venetians departed, the Greek Chians sent right way a message to the Turks in order to inform them about the Venetians’ departure and that they wanted them to be again the masters of the island.  By doing so, the Chians tried to obtain once again the privileges Sultan Suleiman had assigned to them.
