EARLY GENOESE PERIOD 1346-1401.

The benefits deriving from the constitution of Maona for the inhabitants of Chios.

The constitution of Mahona and its establishment in Chios was beneficial to the island, because it protected it from becoming subject to Turkish rule, following thus the fate of most of the Greek territories. In addition, the political experience gained during the period under Genoese rule provided the Chians with adequate knowledge and high degree of political dexterity so as to later obtain sufficient Privileges from the Sultan when their island was eventually fallen to the Turks. The Genoese occupation that was accompanied with an enlightened administration brought Chios in direct communication with the West and subject to the forthcoming influences of renaissance in Arts and thinking.

The Mahona was a novel idea for the political, legal and financial standards of 14th century, but it proved itself an efficient institution, because it was subsequently used as a model for the later Mahone of Cyprus and Corsica. It can be claimed also -even though the circumstances were different in its formation and later development- that the Mahona of Chios is the primary ancestor of the famous British East India Company and the likes organized by the Dutch and French.
