Round five years later, Chios, Rhodes, Kos and later Byzantium rebelled against Athens. That rebellion was called Allied War (357 -355 B.C.). The instigator of the rebellion was Mausolos, who wanted to conquer the islands too. The Athenians sent against Chios sixty triremes under the command of the generals Harita and Havria. This event proves once again how important it was for the Athenians to subjugate of the biggest naval force of the islands, Chios. The allies helped Chios and managed to beat the Athenians in the naval battle taking place in the harbour of Chios, where the general Havrias was killed. The Athenians were put to rout and so Chios was rescued due to the help of the allies and the bravery of the men.
Around 351 B.C. Chios is reported to have been occupied by Kares. The Karen currency that was found in Chios proves the relations that Chios had with Karia. We do not know precisely for how long Chios had been occupied by Kares; however, we assume that in 340 B.C. the island was free again because it helped Byzantium, when the king of Macedonia Philippos II attacked it. The appearance of the allied fleet forced Philippos to raise the siege of Byzantium and to turn against other regions. That was the last time when Chios allied with Athenians in a battle.
